In a recent study of 1,000 18-34 year olds, nearly half said they would be interested in a marriage concept that could be abandoned or made official after a two-year period. Younger adults are more cautious about committing for a lifetime.
New Alternatives to Marriage
The one-size-fits-all model of matrimony may be less-appealing to future generations. The legalization of gay marriage in some states is obviously reinventing the concept of matrimony. A union between people who are only interested in co-parenting is another non-traditional option. Married couples are even opting to live in different homes – or even different cities – either to pursue their chosen careers, or just out of personal preference.
Marriage will evolve as society does. Perhaps creating room for a new type of union is the key to better odds of marital bliss. Younger adults know what they want out of life and are more convinced than ever that they can achieve their goals alone. Marriage may be one of those goals too, but no longer seems to be the first and foremost, at least as millennials are concerned.
